The T-56 six speed manual transmission has been used in a wide range of vehicles from General Motors, Dodge, and Ford Motor Company. The transmission was originally designed and built by Borg-Warner, but as of 1998, is built by Tremec, though nothing changed internally. The T-56 has been succeeded by the Tremec TR-6060 transmission in many former T-56 applications, as well as applications requiring greater strength than the T-56 could offer.
Features
The transmission uses a hydraulic clutch, except for the Cobra which is mechanical and had an 11 inch clutch disk. The entire case, including the bell housing, is made of aluminum. The T-56 has a synchromesh made up of brass synchros for the GM and Ford applications, and stainless steel in the Dodge application. The transmission also features internal stops which render stopbolts on the shifter mechanism unnecessary.

>This article is a stub.

The Borg-Warner T-56 is a six-speed manual transmission used in several high performance cars from GM. Other manufacturers have used it too (like Dodge, in the Viper).

GM cars available with the T-56:
* 1997-2007 Chevrolet Corvette
* 1993-2002 V8 Chevrolet Camaro
* 1993-2002 V8 Pontiac Firebird
* 2004-2006 Pontiac GTO
* 2004-2007 Cadillac CTS-V

Borg-Warner sold the T-56 design to Tremec. Tremec continues to build, support, and improve the T-56.

The TR6060 is based on the T-56 and is built to handle more torque. It is used in the 2008 Corvette Z06, 2007 Dodge Viper, and 2007 Shelby GT500.

Camaros produced from 1993-2002
----

Common Differences

>==1993==

Introduction of the LT1, rated at 275 horsepower. M6 cars offered with either 3.23 or 2.73 rear end ratios due to the 2 different 6 speeds offered in that year. The unique transmission in 93 had a higher (numerically) 1st and 6th gear and GM offered 2.73's to conteract this. A4 cars came with the non computer controlled 700R4. They also had a lower torque capacity because of this. LT1's were ECM controlled rather then PCM, ran off of Speed Density, and were batch fire injected rather the sequential. They have a unique intake manifold casting due to their fuel rails.

1993 marked the introduction of the 4th generation Camaro. Available in two versions: the base coupe, and the Z28. The coupe has black "CAMARO" icons on the front fenders just behind the wheels. The L32 3.4L V6 powered the base Coupe. This is not the same 3.4L that powered the Lumina Z34's of the early '90s. The Z34's engine was an DOHC making around 200hp, compared to 160hp of the Camaro. The DOHC would have been nice and the potential was enormous, but at a 1/3 more cost GM opted to go with the OHV 3.4L. Another reason was that power output was was approaching the Z28's level!

The Z28 was powered by the LT1 5.7L V8 MFI making 275hp. The LT1 was 1st seen in the 1992 Corvette. The Z28's version is slightly de-tuned due to the more restrictive air flow and exhaust.

All Base coupes received body colored C-Panel (unless with T-Top's in which case both roof and c-panels would be black) and all Z28's received black C-panels no matter if equipped with T-Top's or not. All Camaro's had black side mirrors no matter what. All Base coupes received body-colored roofs unless ordered with T-Tops in which case the roof and c-panels would be black. All Z28's had black roofs no matter what. The Z28 had black "Z28" icons on the front fenders, replacing the "CAMARO" icons on the base coupe, and a "+Z28" icon under the right rear tail light.

Both Base Camaro's and Z28's received a new indicator lamp "Low Trac" in the left hand side of the instrument panel. This lamp lit up when ABS brakes were in effect due to low traction. However this is not to be confused as being "Traction Control" which was first introduced in the Camaro in 1995.

The 1993 Z28 was selected as the Indy 500 Pace Car, and came with a special black and white paint scheme with decals, all were t-tops and automatics. Only 645 replicas were produced.

The Coupe came standard with steel wheels and wheel covers. Optional 16" Aluminum alloy wheels were optional, but were standard on the Z28. Instrumentation had yellow lettering, while the window and climate controls were gray.

The base tires were the S-rated Eagle GA. All cars with these tires included a 105 mph speed governor. The Coupe only came with the GA, but the Z28 could be ordered with the Goodyear GS-C (QLC) Z-rated high performance tire, which did away with the speed limiter entirely, and also included the 155 mph speedometer.

Only 3,340 of 39,103 total cars were equipped with T-Tops. No convertibles as GM did not finish the final design in time for the 1993 model year.

Just 19 1LE (the so-called "factory race car" RPO option) cars were made this year.

In 1994, the LT1 Camaro's received the 4L60E, an electronically controlled version of the 700R4. The new models began to use sequential fuel injection and the MAF sensors became PCM controlled.

Fuel injectors were upgraded from 22lb. to 24lb. GM changed from Speed Density to Mass Air Flow control. The EPROM computer chip was now soldered to the main computer board, preventing its removal. Heated 3 wire O2 sensors replaced the single wire.

The Corvette LT1 now benefit with SFI (Sequential fuel injection).

Convertibles were now available.

Instrumentation was changed to white, and the window and climate controls were changed to black.

The T56 6-speed transmission in the Z28's was revised with new gear ratios and also introduced CAGS, the skip-shift feature. The EPA made it necessary on all 6 speeds to meet emissions standards. Under light throttle it locks out second and third gears forcing you to go strait to fourth to maximize fuel efficiency. The only axle ratio available with the 6-speed was now a 3.42.

New Automatic transmission, the 4L60-E electronic unit.

Interior colors were Light Gray, Graphite, Tan, and Flame Red (Available in cloth only).

Leather interior was introduced late in the year, in graphite or tan.

All Camaro Base Coupe's received black side mirrors no matter what. All Camaro Z28 Coupe's received black side mirrors no matter what. All Base Coupes received body-colored C-panels, unless equipped with T-Top's (CC1) in which case both the Roof, and C-panels would be black. All Z28 Coupes received black colored C-panels no matter what. All Base coupes received a body-colored roof well unless equipped with T-Top's (CC1) in which case both the Roof, and C-panels would be black. All Z28 coupes received a black roof no matter if it had T-Tops or not.

Camaro returned in 1995 with the same lineup. A coupe and a convertible were offered in both the base and Z28 series.

The Buick 3800 Series II V6 (L36 3.8L) was introduced midyear, most were available only in California, eclipsing the 3.4L OHV. Z28's in California received dual catalytic converters (Right - under passenger side floor / Left - under left engine manifold), good for an additional 10 hp. Base Eagle GA tires were upgraded from S-rated to T-rated, and the speed limiter was raised from 105 to 115 mph.

The Eagle RSA (QFZ) all-season Z-rated tire was introduced and available on the Z28, in addition to the Eagle GS-C (QLC) high-performance Z-rated tire.

The black roof and mirrors on the Z28's could now be ordered in same body color for no additional charge (if customer selected CC1 T-Top's AND the RPO D82 Monochromatic Roof Paint). Base Coupe could also have the same treatment as long as it was also ordered with the CC1 T-Top's.

The "CAMARO" icons are no longer on base coupes.

Acceleration Slip Regulation (RPO NW9), commonly called traction control, became optional for Z28 coupes and convertibles. The interactive engine and brake system decreased wheel spin on slippery surfaces. A new all-season performance tire option (RPO QFZ) complemented ASR, but could be ordered with any Z28 model.

Exterior colors: Dark Gray-Green Metallic and Purple Pearl metallic dropped. Mystic Teal, Sebring Silver and Dark Purple Metallic introduced.

70 Camaro's were produced as Government vehicles (GAM).

310 were turned into Z28 Police cars (B4C).
Introduction of the vented opti. V6 cars now offered with 3.8L and introduction of Dual Catalytic Converters (California Cars)
Camaro SS bumped up to 320hp, 327hp with SLP's exhaust system. The LS1 debuted in the 1997 Corvette, rated at 345hp. While they are the same engine, most people will tell you that the f-body version is under rated to make the Corvette look better. The camshaft in the Camaro and Firebird is actually a bit more aggresive than the Corvette. Larger brakes (11.8" front/11.9" rear) all around on the Z28, and V6 cars with the Y87 Performance Package option. It includes dual piston front calipers and electronic rear brake force distribution.

Camaro's received a new hood, light settings (headlights were now flush with the car rather than set inside headlight pockets) and nose, (nose now rounded rather than at a point) .primarily to accommodate the LS1 which is slightly taller than the LT1. It is suspiciously similar to that of a Chrysler Concorde, but no changes were made to the rear of the car.

The short-lived Camaro RS was dropped and replaced by the Sport Appearance Package which is now available on all models (basically just ground effects and rear spoiler lip).
Dual (2) catalytic setup now stock on all models (Base/Z28)

1998 was the first Camaro model year for the 4th gen, where the front of the nose was no longer pointed. The front was now cut off and rounded off.

Z28 coupes and convertibles had new engines, 305-hp versions of Corvette's aluminum-block LS1 V8. Z28 models included either an automatic transmission or 6-speed manual at no additional cost.

4-wheel disc brakes (Bosch) and a new ABS system is now standard on all models.

White leather seating surfaces available on all models.

All 1998 Camaro models had new front-end styling including hood, fenders, front facia, composite headlamps and optional foglamps.

Rally Sports were not available, but a new Y3F sport appearance package contained similar content and was available for all models except SS.

In 1998, the SS order code changed to WU8, an "in house" option. In 1996-1997, Z28s were built at Ste. Therese and converted to SS by SLP Engineering. Beginning in 1998, SS's were built at Ste. Therese and shipped to SLP in nearby LaSalle with a temporary hood. SLP added the new hood, spoiler and any SLP exclusive content. SS included a 320-hp LSI, composite hood with air induction, P275/40ZR17 tires, 17x9" specific wheels, 3" stainless exhaust tip, special suspension, and SS trim.

Base coupes had body-color roofs and Z28 coupes had black roofs.

A new engine oil-life monitor monitor which tracks engine rpm, coolant temperature, and driving time, then uses an algorithm to predict the oil's condition. When the system determines the oil needs to be serviced, an "oil change" light illuminates on the instrument panel.

V6 cars get traction control.

Exterior colors: Bright Purple Metallic, Cayenne Red Metallic, and Sport Gold Metalic dropped. However 5 coupe Camaro's were in fact painted Sport Gold. These were exclusively done for a special Days Inn promotion developed in 1998 when Sport Gold was a stock color.

Hugger Orange, Bright Blue Metallic, Light Pewter Metallic, Dark Amethyst Metallic, and Fern Green Metallic added.

The engine received smaller fuel injectors and a bracket, which mounted the ignition coils together, rather than having them all latched on separately.

Camaro's for 1999 received a black box which records data up to 5 seconds before an accident for use in analyzing air bag, ABS, and other data during a collision.

Zexel Torsen differential replaces all limited-slip differential applications.

Interior and exterior appearance for 1999 was carried over from 1998.

Unlike the Corvette, Camaro's with LSI V8 engines never had electronic throttle linkage. However, electronic throttle control was included with V6 coupes and convertibles starting in 1999.

A new engine oil life monitor used a computer algorithm to analyze engine rpm, coolant temperature and driving distances to determine recommended oil change intervals.

A new non-metallic tank increased fuel capacity from 15.5 gal to 16.8.

The most obvious change for the 2000's are the new style of wheels. The V6 still comes with wheel covers (which have been the same style since 1993), although the 16" wheels are optional. The Z28 has the 16" wheels standard with either a painted or polished surface. The 17" wheels are not available on the V6 or Z28. They are part of the SS Performance Appearance package.

The interior gets an update with a radio control steering wheel similar to the Firebird and Grand Prix's, leather wrapped. Cloth available in: Ebony (black), Accent, and Medium Gray. Leather available in Ebony and Neutral. Neutral cloth and Arctic White leather dropped.

Fog lights, power mirrors, door locks, windows, keyless entry, and Monsoon premium sound system w/ cassette player now standard equipment on V6 Convertible.

Body color side mirrors on Z28 only. Z28 low coolant sensor was dropped.

The Z28 mirrors are body-coloured, dual sport; addition of leather-wrapped steering wheel with wheel mounted radio controls.
Aluminum wheel designs were new, including RPO N96 16" standard with Z28, N98 16" polished optional with all but SS, and the 17" SS style. N98 required excess finishing time and was changed to chrome finish. It is thought all polished wheels went on GM fleet vehicles.

Ebony (true black) interior replaced Dark Gray. Medium Gray interior replaced White. Accent replaced Red Accent. Fabrics were new styles.

Camaro is the purest, most uncompromising expression of the breed, making it "America's honest sports car." Camaro remains true to it's 34 year heritage character, whether in coupe or convertible form. Equipped with either the standard 3800 V6 engine or the growling Corvette-inspired 5.7 Liter LS1 V8, Camaro is eager to perform. And with four unique models, three transmission options and other option packages such as the SS, Camaro is the next best thing to a Corvette, offering the customer an affordable choice to the higher-priced domestic or import models.

Code 71 Sunset Orange was a new 2001 exterior color, although 13 2000 models were also painted this hue. Sebring Silver Metallic (code 13) and Hugger Orange (code 99) were not available.

Newly styled 16-inch chrome wheels were introduced.

In the way of functionality, the LS1 V8 engine has an improved horsepower rating of 310 and an improved torque rating of 340 lb.-ft. for Z28 models. Plus the SS models also offer more power with horsepower rising to 325 and torque improving to 350 lb.-ft.

The Base Camaro convertible is discontinued in Canada; decontented Z28 model introduced.

LS6 Intakes are now stock on all F-Bodies along with the removal of EGR, GM installed smaller camshafts as well. New updated Slave and Master cylinder are introduced to help fix the problems with the older systems.

The Base Camaro convertible is discontinued in Canada; decontented Z28 model introduced.

Production of 29,009 Camaro's in 2001 was the lowest in Camaro history. Part of the reason was an early build-out to allow an early start up of 2002 production, the Camaro's 36th and final year.

Horsepower for the LSI engine (Z28 and B4C models) increased from 305hp to 310hp, and torque from 335 lb.-ft to 340 lb.-ft. Horsepower for the Camaro SS version of the LSI increased from 320hp to 325hp, and torque from 345 lb.-ft to 350 lb.-ft.

Code 71 Sunset Orange was a new 2001 exterior color, although 13 2000 models were also painted this hue. Sebring Silver Metallic (code 13) and Hugger Orange (code 99) were not available.

The Camaro reaches the final year of production. Heritage/Anniversary packages are available as well as the 35th Anniversary badging. Badging could be the Camaro Dash Plate, or even embroidered on the headrests. Wheel choices also differ for special Anniversary Packages.
Certain 2002 LS1's were also found with the LS6 Corvette engine block. Factory 'Freaks' crank out a whopping 400 BHP, 60 more than advertised.

Camaro celebrates its 35th year of Performance American Style. Camaro's V8, rear-drive DNA dates back to the fall of 1966 and remains an icon of uncompromised performance.

The 2002 Camaro is a 2-door, up to 4-passenger CS, or CV, available in 4 trims, ranging from the Coupe to the Z28 Convertible. The 2002 Camaro's closest competitors include the Acura RSX, the Mitsubishi Eclipse, and the Volkswagen New Beetle Convertible.

Upon introduction, the Coupe is equipped with a standard 3.8-liter, V6, 200-horsepower engine that achieves 19-mpg in the city and 31-mpg on the highway. A 5-speed transmission with overdrive is standard, and a 4-speed a transmission with overdrive is optional. The Z28 Convertible is equipped with a standard 5.7-liter, V8, 310-horsepower engine that achieves 18-mpg in the city and 25-mpg on the highway. A 4-speed a transmission with overdrive is standard, and a 5-speed manual transmission with overdrive is optional at no-extra-cost.

Sebring Silver Metallic (Code 11) once again available for the 2002 Camaro model year after being not available for the 2001 Camaro model year.

The 2002 Camaro is a carryover from 2001.

Farewell to the F-body!

The GM St. Therese plant in Canada will produce the very last Camaro (and Firebird). They will roll off the assembly lines for the last time Tuesday, August 27th 2002. Both cars will be red convertables and will go into GM's Heritage Collection.

The St. Therese plant will officially close Wednesday, August 28th 2002.

Last year for Camaro. Official wording by General Motors was "Hiatus". As the Camaro was put on Hiatus. Seeing how "Hiatus" means "Put on hold", and not discontinued, we can assume this means they have indeed put it on HOLD and will bring it back at a later date.

Introduction of a special 35th Anniversary package; reintroduced base convertible model with V6 engine and 4-speed automatic transmission.

Camaro Base convertible now came with a 4-speed automatic transmission rather than the 5-speed manual. There was no 5-speed or 6-speed manual transmission available for the Camaro base convertible.

A 35th Anniversary Edition (Z4C) was available for SS. All had Bright Red exterior and ebony leather interior with medium gray leather seat inserts. Front headrests had 35th embroidery. Coupes required T-tops; convertibles had black soft tops. Dual stripes faded solid silver into a checkered flag over the hood and onto the rear decklid. Black SS wheels had machine-faced bright surfaces. Specific front grille and rear between-taillamp panel had bright CAMARO lettering. Coupes had rear "trophy" display mats, and red roof bands (black for Z28 and non-Z4C SS).

Sebring Silver Metallic (Code 11) once again available for the 2002 Camaro model year after being not available for the 2001 Camaro model year.

Z4C models were built at Camaro's Ste. Therese plant, then shipped to SLP for stripes, hood scoop accent and any RPO Y2Y content.

AM-FM stereo with CD was standard with base coupe. Monsoon AM-FM premium stereo was included with all Z28s and base convertibles.

The first 2002, a Z4C convertible, and last went to GM's collection. The next-to-last auctioned for charity to Mark Gembinski for $71,500.
The first route stretched from Los Angeles to Norwalk, Ohio, and there were thousands of participants along the way.

XP-836 was the designation for the very first Camaro design. It was a four seat sporty coupe that would share an all-new platform with the 1968 Nova X-body.

http://www.holisticpage.com/camaro/images/dynamite.jpg

Chevrolet General Manager E.M. "Pete" Estes
setting off the Camaro explosion, September 21, 1966

While Ford was fighting off the early successes of the Chevrolet Corvair and Chevy II with their introduction of the Mustang in August of 1964, GM began work on a counter-punch experimental project named XP-836. The XP-836 project directly targeted the Ford Mustang mystique and the new youth market that emerged from almost nowhere in the eyes of GM marketers. The surprising popularly of Ford’s Mustang framed the XP-836 project from the very start and incorporated the “Mustang formula” in the early years of production.

http://www.holisticpage.com/camaro/images/xp836.jpg

In the winter of 1965, the XP-836 project turned out a proto type car based on some cobbled up Chevy IIs. While crude, the new Chevrolet was shaping up to run well along side Ford’s Pony car. Now named the “Panther”, the project and the proto-types were written about in great length by the automotive press with all the excitement of a pending rivalry with the Mustang. Given a name that the public could latch onto, the “Panther” was quickly being promoted as GM’s Mustang-fighter. Sometimes called “Chevy’s Mustang” the “Panther” evolved conceptually using much of the Mustang marketing formula.

http://www.holisticpage.com/camaro/images/clay1.jpg

June 1962 clay model of the XP-836

Now branded with the “Panther” script and leaping-cat emblems similar to that used by Jaguar, the proto-types advanced with an outward confidence that Chevrolet’s sleek new cat would be chasing down the Mustang. By early 1966, Ralph Nader was doing a hatchet job on the Corvair, and GM management sought to tone-down the image of their new car in hopes of not drawing the attention of safety crusaders with the aggressive “Panther” name.

Seeking a “clammier” image for the new car, the marketing department looked to their current line of Chevrolet monikers, the Corvair, Corvette, Chevelle, and Chevy II for inspiration. Desiring another “C” name brand, merchandising manager Bob Lund and GM Car & Truck Group vice-president Ed Rollert poured through French and Spanish dictionaries and came up with “Camaro.” Meaning, “warm friend”, the new name offered GM an excellent label to compliment the current Chevrolet line and introduce their new car with a much tamer image.

>==1970==

1970 was the beginning year of the Second Generation Camaro. With a whole new look and attitude.

Production of 1969 Camaro's extended well into the 1970 model year. Buoyed by the success of the first-generation Camaro's, Chevrolet took a bold step and introduced a completely redesigned model for 1970. The redesigned 1970 Camaro's were not introduced to the public until February 26, 1970, causing some of the new cars to be labeled with a 1970 1/2 moniker, though CM certified them all as 1970 models. Taking styling cues from Ferrari, the Camaro designers created a car that captured the heart of America. The new Camaro was a more complete car, able to handle the curves as well as the quarter-mile, and challenged even the mighty Corvette for division supremacy. This body style would prove to be the longest-running Camaro platform. The basic design continued to evolve over the next 12 model years until 1982. The 1970 Camaro was longer, lower, and wider than its predecessors.

The second version of the Camaro was available in a coupe body style only; no convertible model was offered. The first four years C70-V3) produced a car that looked very similar from almost any angle except in front. Even there, they all shared a common appearance and differed only with trim levels and performance packages. One of the most outstanding characteristics between the models of those first four years was the stylish split-bumper nose with Endura grille surround and round marker lamps above the chrome bumperettes, which were only offered on the RS and Z28 models.

This would also be the only generation (2nd Generation) Camaro series to NOT offer a convertible type top.

"Z/28" emblems were replaced with "Z28" starting in 1970.

Facts

1970 was the first year to start "Z28" emblems as apposed to "Z/28" in 1967-1968.

1970 was the last Camaro model year for 12 bolt axles for the Camaro

1970 was the first and only year to have offered a low-back style seat & headrest.

Sun visor was longer than other models

1970 was the first and only Camaro model year a Chrome "C" was used on the header panel.

Only year a "Camaro by Chevrolet" emblem used on trunk

Only year side marker lights didn't blink with signals

1970 was the first Camaro model year to have side impact beams in their doors.

The 396ci big-block Camaro engine displacement increased slightly, sometimes referred to as 400ci or 402ci

The ONLY time in which the ENTIRE Camaro product Generation (2nd Generation 1970 - 1981) in which there were NO Convertible body styles offered.

1970 marked a year in which the Camaro 230ci 6-cylinder and 454ci V8 engines were not available to the public for this year.

Concealed windshield wipers, which tucked under the rear lip of the hood, were optional in 1970 Camaro's.

1970 was the 1st Camaro model year for glue-to-the-windshield rearview mirrors.

1970 was the 1st Camaro model year to introduce in-glass windshield antennas for Camaro's. These were included with all factory-installed radios.

1970 was the first Camaro model year where the Turbo Hydra-Matic automatic transmission was available for Z28's. However the downside of it was that air conditioning could be be combined with the Z28's as well.

All instruments, including those in the Special Instrumentation option, were grouped in the main instrument cluster and not on the console as it was in previous years. It incorporated a gauge cluster that was said to be easier for the driver to read, but the side gauges were so small that the driver had to squint to read the markings.

There was now Two (2) spoilers available. The RPO D80 was a small, one-piece (1) style spoiler and a larger, three-piece (3) COPO 9796 style ($36.90) was also available.

The 1970 Camaro body was longer and wider than the previous 1st generation Camaro's.

The 1970 Camaro had LESS back seat area and LESS truck space than in the previous 1st generation Camaro's.

The Rally Sport hideaway headlights were no longer available. 1969 was the last Camaro model year to have hide-away headlights.

1970 was the 1st Camaro model year to incorporated a big, square, egg-crate-looking grille that looked like a mouth. This was a completely new nose that gave the second generation Camaro an entirely new look which set the look apart from the 1st generation Camaro's.

The 1970 RS Camaro's has an all-new "split-bumper" front end.

On the back of the 1970 Camaro's was a tapered rear end generated a smooth, aerodynamic look.

The 1967-1969 square taillights were replaced with dual, circular, pod-type taillights on the 1970 Camaro model year.

1970 was the first Camaro model year to have lift-up-style door handles, and square marquee badges.

In 1970, there were several engine choices, including an inline six-cylinder, four different small-block V8's, and 2 big-block V8's. Although the big-blocks were called 396's, in reality they actually displaced 402ci. Originally, the mighty LS6 was scheduled as an option for the 1970 Camaro, but because the car came out so late, Chevy decided against offering it. And with increasingly more stringent smog requirements on the horizon, the days of big-block-equipped Camaro's were numbered.

The 1970 Camaro model year had similar framework of the 1st generation Camaro's, but the 1970 models (and on to 1973) had a more ridged body fitted with improved suspension components. To further increase handling potential, a sport suspension package could be ordered under RPO F41.

Added padding, increased sealant applied to body panel joining areas, and a double roof radically were added to the 1970 Camaro model year to help cut down on noise.

Low-back bucket seats were offered in the 1970 Camaro model year. (but were changed to a high-back design starting in 1972 to generate added support).

Sports Car Club of America's Trans Am 1970 series rules permitted destroking larger engines, so 1970 Z28's had 350ci, 360hp engines.

The F platform, or F-body, was General Motors' small rear-wheel drive automobile platform from 1967 until 2002. It was based partially on the GM X platform, which was used for compact applications instead of the sporting intent of the F-Body. The only two vehicles to have been built using the F-Body platform are the Chevrolet Camaro and the Pontiac Firebird. The fourth character in the Vehicle Identification Number for an F-body car is "F".

>==First Generation, 1967-1969==

The first F-body cars were produced in 1967, as GM's response to the Ford Mustang. Camaro was to be named "Panther". Originally designed strictly as the platform for the Camaro, Pontiac engineers were given a short amount of time prior to the Camaro's release to produce a version that matched their corporate styling as well. Production of both cars were at 2 plants,Van Nuys CA and Norwood,OH. The F-Body was available as both a hardtop coupe and a cloth-top convertible. As was GM policy at the time, Chevrolet and Pontiac both installed their own engines; however, the engine lineups were similar. Both cars could be had with either division's base inline six-cylinder engine, a V8 engine of approximately 5.3 liters (327 in3 for Chevrolet, 326 in3 for Pontiac), or a larger V8 engine of approximately 6.6 liters (396 in3 for Chevrolet, 400 in3 for Pontiac). Due to delays with the design of the second-generation car, the 1969 models were produced longer than usual.
Second Generation, 1970-1981
The second generation F-Body cars were actually released as '1970 1/2' cars, due to extensive delays in the design and production of the new body style. Both cars grew considerably, with fairly drastic changes in styling to match each brand's updated styling across the lineup. Both cars also received engine options in the 7.4 L range in the earlier years of the second generation - 454 in3 for Chevrolet, and 455 in3 for Pontiac. However, both of these engines would be discontinued as emissions and fuel-economy restrictions made their production costs prohibitive. Performance continued to decline through 1981, as power levels dropped and weight increased.

Third Generation, 1982-1992
The third generation of the F-Body was introduced for 1982, as a major redesign with a more modern look and a lighter, better-handling car. In a move that would later happen across almost all GM models, the Firebird switched from Pontiac-designed engines to the same Chevrolet engines that powered the Camaro. This was also the only generation of F-Body to be available with a four-cylinder, the LQ9 Iron Duke. Camaro news included a deal with Jay Signore and IROC to use the nameplate as the official car for the race series in 1985,a contract that ended Dec.31 1989.Camaro owners who wanted the wind in their hair could finally have a convertible(an option missing since 1969) in 1987,although Canadians had to wait a year until 1988 for ragtops. All convertibles started their life as a T-Top car and final installation was sub-contracted to ASC.The last Firebird to be built with an engine not available in the Camaro was the 1989 Turbo Trans Am, which had a turbocharged 3.8 L Buick V6, derived from the Buick Regal. Other Available engines were: L98, the TPI 350ci; LB9, the TPI 305ci; L03, the TBI 305ci; L69, the Carb (HO) 305ci; LG4, the carb (non HO) 305ci; LU5, the CFI (Crossfire) 305ci; LH0, the MPFI 191ci v6; LB8, the MPFI 173ci v6; LC1 carb 173ci v6; LQ8, the carb 151ci L4. Power was put to the ground through the TH-700R4 4 speed automatic or a T-5 5 speed Manual, with a variety of rear end ranging from 2.73 up to 3.73

Fourth Generation, 1993-2002
The fourth generation of F-body was released in 1993.The entire life-cycle of the 4th gen was produced at the GM plant in Ste. Therese,QC Canada, a first in the history of F-Bodies. It was an extensive revision to the third generation car, instead of a clean-sheet design. It was produced until the platform was canceled at the end of the 2002 model year. Unlike most of the years past, the engine choices were simplified considerably; each year, on both the Camaro and the Firebird, there was only one V6 and one V8 available. For 1993 to 1995, the V6 was the 3.4 L (208 in³) 60°; 1996-2002 cars received the 3.8L (231 in³) 3800 Series II V6. 1993-1997 V8 cars shipped with the 5.7L (350 in³) LT1, while 1998-2002 cars received the 5.7L (346 in³) LS1. Both engines were available with the 4L60E four-speed auotmatic transmission. V6 engines with a manual transmission had a Tremec T5 five-speed unit; the manual for V8 cars was the T-56 six-speed, manufactured by either Borg-Warner or Tremec. An optional [[Hurst Performance|Hurst]]-supplied shifter was also available on V8 models. There was no convertible for 93 but 1996 saw the return of the "SS" badge for Camaro and enjoyed a magazine-print frenzy with its' many cover sightings.

The F-Body has not had a direct replacement since production ceased in 2002; the closest would be the modern Pontiac GTO, though it is a larger and heavier car. GM has announced that the Camaro will return in 2009 as a 2010 model, most likely utilizing the Zeta chassis. There are no plans to revive the Firebird nameplate, to the dismay of its fans.
1996 Chevrolet Camaro Z28/SS

----
The 1996 Camaro SS was an exciting return of the model since it was the first year of production since 1972. Chevrolet decided to bring in the help of SLP(Street Legal Performance) Engineering. Chevrolet sent SLP the Camaro Z28 for them to create the Super Sport Camaro. SLP added the base SS package options and also additional options upon order. The production of Camaro SS cars that year ended up being only 2,410. This ended up being the rarest year SS Camaro Chevrolet has offered to date. The limited production of this model meant that you could only purchase one in the following colors: Black, Polo Green, Red, Teal, and White. The SS was offered with 305 HP compared to the 285 HP of the same year Z28.

RPO R7T (SS Package) was available through dealers, but was a non-Chevy modification by SLP Engineering. It included 305hp engine, special hood with functional scoop and forced induction, restyled decklid spoiler, revised suspension (coupes), 17x9" Corvette-style ZR-1 wheels with P275-40-ZR17 tires (coupes), and special badging. Other items available separately. Limited to White, Polo Green, Teal, Black, and Red.
<td width=600>The 4L60E was introduced to the F-body line in the 1994 model year. 4L60E indicates that there are 4 forward gears, L for longitudily mounted (a.k.a. rear wheel drive), 60 is a numerical strength rating, and E means that it is electronically controlled by the PCM.

Factory gear ratios on these transmissions were 3.06 1st gear, 1.63 2nd gear, 1.00 3rd gear, and 0.70 4th gear.
The 4L60E replaced the 4L60/700R4. The primary difference between the 4L60 and the 4L60E is the electronic solenoids used to control gear shifts.</td><td> </td>

XP-836 was the designation for the very first Camaro design. It was a four seat sporty coupe that would share an all-new platform with the 1968 Nova X-body.
