1992 was the 25th anniversary of the Camaro, and GM celebrated it by offering the "25th Anniversary Heritage Edition". This option package included a stripe kit, a 25th anniversary badge, black headlight pockets, and an exterior color matching grill. Color choices orginally included white with red stripes, black with red stripes, and red with black stripes. Partially through the model year, two new color combinations were available: purple with silver stripes, and teal with gold stripes.

The 1992 Camaro model year marked the 25th Anniversary for the Camaro.

Sales were slow for 1992 because many people wanted to see what the '93s would be like since it was rumored that an all new Camaro was to be offered.

Mid-year, valve covers on TPI motors changed from silver to black.

All 1992 Camaro's had 25th anniversary emblems on their instrument panels. An exterior appearance option called the Heritage Package (RPO Z03) included hood and deck stripes, a body-color grille, black headlamp pockets, and a special deck lid badge. Z03 was available with all models, but exterior colors were limited to Arctic White, Black, Bright Red or Purple Haze for Z28s. The same colors, plus Polo Green II, were available for RS models.

Four (4) new colors, Purple Haze Metallic, Dark Green-Gray Metallic, Polo Green II Metallic, and Medium Quasar Blue Metallic were added for 1992. Otherwise, with the exception of the Heritage Package, 1992 exterior appearance remained virtually the same as 1991.

"Factory" Convertible or Not:

To recognize whether a 3rd-gen convertibles (sometimes referred to a "ragtop") is a "factory" or an aftermarket job, the best thing to do is to check VIN number. If the 6th digit is a number "2", that indicates a factory coupe and a later aftermarket conversion. If it was ordered as a convertible, the digit will be a number "3". Another clue is to look at the RPO code sticker that is located on the inside of the center console glove box (if the cover is original). Factory ragtops will have a code "CC1" (T-top coupe) as well as the code "Z08" ("Model Conversion, Convertible").

Note: There WERE Camaro Z28 Convertibles produced with the L98 350 engine (installed by ASC at time of coupe - Convertible conversion) however this was not a GM feature or option. As a result, you will NEVER find a 1992 Camaro Z28 Convertible with a "3" as the 6th digit (Convertible) AND "8" (L98 350-cid) as the 8th digit in the VIN number.

Z28 coupes could have a 350-cid and so the 6th digit would be "2". The customer could then have their coupe converted to a convertible which would mean it would have a 350-cid engine. However, only GM stamped the "3" on the VIN and so the 8th digit will NEVER be "8" and 6th digit a "3"

1992 Camaro Model Year Facts

Courtesy lamps were added to the rear-seat area of all 1992 Camaro convertible models. Also, all 1992 convertibles were equipped with new 3-point rear-seat safety belts.

Chevrolet built 705 Camaro's with "1LE" special performance compo nents equipment for 1992.

As in 1989, 1990, and 1991, RPO 1LE was triggered by RPO G92. RPO G92 required either the 305ci LB9 V8 with 5-speed manual, or the 350ci B2L V8 with automatic transmission.

When ordered with air conditioning ($466), RPO G92 included engine oil cooler, 4-wheel disc brakes, and dual-converter exhaust. Without air condition ing ($675), RPO G92 added heavy-duty front brakes, aluminum driveshaft and spare wheel, special sho cks and fuel pickup, and gas tank baffle.

Fog lamps were deleted for weight savings and better air flow to the radiator. Available for Z28 Coupes only.

Chevrolet built 589 Camaro's with Special Service Package (RPO B4C). It was similar to RPO G92 with air conditioning since it offered the same engine choices, had dual-converter exhaust, 16-inch wheels, 4-wheel disc brakes (including Corvette-style front brake calipers), engine oil cooler, 145-mph speedometer and special suspension.

RPO B4C was restricted to RS Coupes. RPO B4C Camaro's in 1992 (but not 1991) included the "1LE" code on their service parts identification labels, apparently due to the inclusion of the Corvette-style front brake calipers.

The RPO L98 350-cid, 245-hp V8 engine could not be ordered with 1992 Camaro convertibles from Chevrolet dealers.

However, ASC did build convertibles for customer-owned Camaro's (also true in 1986, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1990 & 1991) and some 1992 350ci Camaro convertibles were definitely built.

The 6th digit will NEVER be "3" (convertible) in this case. It will ALWAYS be "2" (coupe) as it started off as a coupe with the optional L98 350-cid engine. This applies to ALL 3rd Gen Convertibles.

The Dash emblem on the RS now now read "RS" rather than "CAMARO"(Heritage Edition Only).

The words "Tuned Port Injection" disappeared from the TPI throttle body cover leaving in it's place a plain looking silver metal plate.

Starting Mid-year, valve covers on TPI engines changed from silver to black (like LO3 V8).

Near the end of the production year, the traditional smooth-appearance Camaro TPI runners were replaced with rough, cast-appearance TPI runners (like on the Corvette L98). These runners were possibly old Corvette stock being used up on the Z28's since the Corvette's L98 was replaced by the LT1 in 1992.

Z28 convertible came only with P235/55R-16 tires for 1992.

HD calipers and 11.86 front brakes became standard on the B4C special service package.

The L03 V6 was started for BOTH RS Coupe AND convertible this year. (Last year, RS convertible came standard with L03 V8 and V6 available as delete-delete option).
